Songs about Australia

Post by Pseudo »

With Australia Day approaching I thought I'd cobble together a playlist of songs about Australia.

Thought of the following:

GANG gajang - Sounds Of Then ( hi @PhilG !)
Christine Anu (or Warumpi band) - My Island Home
Men At Work - Down Under
Icehouse - Great Southern Land
Client Liaison - The End Of The Earth
Peter Allen - I Still Call Australia Home
The Go Betweens - Cattle and Cane

Can anyone think of any more? I want songs about Australia and Australian life in general. Not classic Aussie songs (no Khe Sanh) and not songs about specific issues or things (no Beds Are Burning).

Hey Pseudo, great list (apart from Client Liaison). I really like Cattle and Cane. Great song, very underrated. Shame about the lead singer, that band was very very good!

I'd add anything from Paul Kelly, such as Leaps and Bounds which has a heap of Australiana in it.

My list may be way off, but it's (random) Australian acts.

Hunters and Collectors - Holy Grail
John Farnham - You're The Voice
Johnny O'Keefe - Shout/She's My Baby/The Wild One
Colleen Hewett - wind beneath my wings
Seekers - Georgy Girl
Rattling Sabres - All Fired Up
Rat Cat - Don't Go Now
(at a stretch) Dragon - April Sun in Cuba
Billy Thorpe - It's Almost Summer
Darryl Braithwaite - One Summer/Rise
Australian Crawl - Errol
Cold Chisel - Ita
Skyhooks - Horror Movie
Ted Mulry Gang - Jump in my Car
Sherbet - Howzat
The Church - Metropolis/Unguarded Moment
The Saints - Just Like Fire Would
The Sunnyboys - Alone With You
Yothu Yindi - Treaty

If you're looking for something alternative, how about TISM?

I'm after songs about Australia, not songs by Australians.

On that note I think I'd pick "St Kilda to Kings Cross" from Paul Kelly before "Leaps and Bounds".

Some good suggestions among the posts above; keep 'em coming.

TISM - Father and Son

My old man used to take me to the footy;
Now, it's me takes him.
Been barracking for the Saintas seasons on end -
Seasons cold and grim -
Every season we'd pretend that we were
The great pretenders,
And watch, in the rain, us getting done again
By the real contenders.
Hear the cry ring to the Moorabbin sky,
Nothing can stop it:
Winmar! Winmar to Lockett!
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

It's not a song per se, but Austen Tayshus's hit single "Australiana" IMO deserves a spin.

Sorry Psuedo. I did get that bit, but check out the time I posted it. I had trouble writing the titles in my post. I was a bit 'three sheets' at 2:00am to care. Apologies!

Some of them I guess, whilst watching the film clips brought me back to the "Aussie" theme, such as old pubs in the film clip, or classic icons, cars of the era, etc, etc.

The Fauves-Long Load (great lyrics about Aussie truck drivers)

The Fauves-Sunbury '97 (about the Sunbury music festival in regional Victoria)

The Fauves-Surf City Limits (about Aussie beach culture doubling as a Beverley Hills 90210 parody)

The Fauves-Kickin' On (self-explanatory)
