Norwood grinded its way to an ugly seven-point victory against Port Adelaide at The Parade on Anzac Eve.
Nothing came with ease for the Redlegs who were unable to shrug off the plucky Pies throughout the night but did enough to claim the valuable premiership points in Jack Heard’s 100th match.
Midway during the second quarter, Norwood was winning the inside 50 count 24-13 yet trailed by a goal as they were plagued by inaccuracy and wastefulness in both field kicking and in front of goal.
Trailing by 13 points at half-time, the hosts could manage just 3.9 in the second half, including five behinds in the final quarter as the visitors failed to make them pay.
The Legs’ defensive set up forced Port into chipping the ball sideways to rack up 46 more marks which translated into 19 fewer inside 50 forays.
Dynamic Legs midfielder Nik Rokahr racked up a team-high 35 touches while Baynen Lowe (24 disposals, one goal) and Alastair Lord (23 disposals) found their share of the Sherrin.
Star Norwood recruit Aaron Francis continued his hot form by controlling the air with 10 marks to go with 25 disposals from the back half while Finn Heard worked tirelessly in the ruck for 22 disposals and eight marks as Harry Boyd remained sidelined with a hand injury.
Port’s Will Lorenz held his head high with a staggering 40 possessions and 13 marks while Jackson Mead collected 27 disposals and Jack Watkins 25 and a goal.
SA U20 squad member Rome Burgoyne tallied 25 disposals and 13 marks in one of his best games of Hostplus SANFL League footy.
The Magpies were hindered by only having one rotation from the bench as Benny Barrett, Dylan Whimpress and Tom Anastasopolous were sidelined for a large portion of the contest
