72 clubs 8 divisions of 9 teams. 18 rounds with 2 bye’s and final 4 with 1 less week of finals. 2 up and 2 down And North & South conferences.

I think I can hear every clubs volunteers clapping from here….
I do believe from Div 3 to Div 7 it should be split, North and South. Div 1 & 2 getting around South Australia. But Div 3 N, Div 3 S, Div 4 N, Div 4 S, Div 5 N, Div 5 S would be ideal.

Why?

Don't think the travel is bad in any of those divisions.

Marion's was in D6 a few years ago, now in D4 it's more than fine. Swings and roundabouts, we don't need AFL-style kneejerk reactions to problems that don't really exist, or only affect a small minority.

While i think the whole travel arguement & seperating divisions to regions/subrubs is ridiculous, your point above makes zero sense.

GG, Salisbury North, TTG, Athelstone all in Div 1 next yr, so based off your logic, it wouldn't be better for a Southern/Sth West suburbs team to simply get better?

For me the beauty of the AdFL is:

* Ability for clubs to be promoted / relegated and end in a division where they can be competitive
* Enjoy potentially 4x new clubs each year and keep it fresh.
* Opportunity to travel and visit different clubs
* SA is a small state, rarely do you need to drive more than 20-30min to reach anywhere.

Granted some clubs have to do more travel i.e. Trinity, Hackham, OSB - but for everyone else, you're potentially only driving there once a season - and for some you may never travel there.

D6 next year has Gaza in it, I can't recall ever playing at Gaza over my time - not in Jnr footy, or when I was at Kilburn, and certainly not while i've been at Ingle Farm.. it's exciting (and it's local) because it's different.

Finally, it's hard enough in the North-East competing for players as it is.. if suddenly the clubs were all lumped into divisions geographically, it would be a nightmare and dare I say cripple or kill some clubs.

How far north have you ever been??

I loved the aspect of visiting other clubs, a couple of my boys have had stints in the AdelFL and it was good fun getting out to clubs all over town, sampling the wares at the canteen and bbq, etc.

I don't think we have a big enough population in Adelaide to support northern & southern leagues. It works in Melbourne because of the sheer number of clubs, so here we get the novelty of travelling like it's a country competition, but without ever having to leave suburbia.

Ok well anywhere might've been an exaggeration haha! But generally speaking, you can reach most places / clubs in a short period of time.

The concept of having north and south Divisions is a silly debate these days with triple headers and D1 to D7 being exclusively A grade teams. Look at the travel that many city-based country players make for every game they play. The $ may help numb the travel pain for some of those but there are still plenty who travel to their original home town to play for nothing or very little. Kenilworth do have a bit of a stinker with travel in 2026 but they had a very friendly travel schedule this year. As Bedge said - swings and roundabouts.
