2008 GF Teams - comparison to modern day teams.
More a question for Bay supporters… how does the below team compare to today’s team? From a Dogs perspective the 2008 side would unmercifully thrash our current team… but for a modern day team who go into the finals series as warm/hot favourites… how do they compare to this team?
B: John Hinge, Sam Rudolph, Byron Murphy
HB: Ben Mules, Paul Sherwood, Luke Panozzo
C: Ben Kane, Lucas Block, Todd Holmes
HF: Ruory Kirkby, Todd Grima, Brett Backwell
F: Matthew Bode, Matthew Duldig, Daniel Kirk
R: Trevor Cranston, Ty Allen, Adam Fisher
Int From: Josh Willougby, Mark Ruwoldt, Chris Kane, Scott Lewis, James Sellar (Two to be omited)

Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

I'll leave it up to Tigers fans to debate this question. What I am going to add is a stat fact about this particular team. They are the only Grand Final side to have had all its players not play in another Grand Final (Sellar did not play, nor Lewis). They and Norwood's 1960 GF side are the only runners-up sides to not have any of its players play in a premiership side.

Good question Hazy
For me it’s like asking a mother which child they love more? So many things I love about both those teams. The 2009 2nd semi still cuts deep.
I think the result between our two teams would be closer than your teams. Your 2007-2010 teams were one of the best the SANFL has seen in terms of team discipline, ability and toughness at the footy.
I think talent wise our 2008 team shades our current team ability wise but our current team is arguably better structured and resilient at the contest.
Their ability to win key contests in GFs like your team did in the 2007-10 era is a strength of our current team.

Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

For a "train spotter" like me I find those a couple of incredible stats.
For a moment I thought of North in 2007 and 2013 to have at least not had a premiership player, but from 2007 Jimmy Allan played for Norwood in 2014 and in 2013 Chad O'Sullivan had played in numerous Central flags.

Other ones to be close are:
Norwood 1933 GF team - Heinrich 'Buckets' Krome and Eric Alfred Johnson - played in the 1929 flag side and 1928 runners up
Glenelg 1950 GF team - Allan Crabb and John Taylor played in the combined 1942 runners up side, and Taylor also played in Wests 1947 premiership team
West 1991 GF team - Bruce Lindner and Robbie McKinnon played in the 1983 premiership side
Port 2019 GF team - Jarrod Lienert in 2016 and Boyd Woodcock in 2018

Re: 2008 GF Teams - comparison to modern day teams.
How do South in 79 compare?
I couldn't find a line-up, and the only ones I could think who may have played in a GF for another team were Schneebichler, Eddie Fry, Frank Spiel, though could be wrong.
Who played in a winning GF for another team from that South side?

Wayne Slattery for North in 1987.

Was Robert Oatey the only player from Norwood's 1961 losing side to play in a flag. Also did he have the longest time span between a losing and winning Grand Final?

Thanks RB, wouldn't have thought of him, although did know he played for both clubs.

Yes, Fry in 1983 for Sturt, Schneebichler for Glenelg in 1988, Slattery for North in 1987. Spiel didn't play in the 1979 GF.

No, Lester Ross as well for South in 1964. And I think that is correct, Jason Porplyzia would be next - 2003 then 2015.

Re: 2008 GF Teams - comparison to modern day teams.
A quick look at the Eagles premiership teams, and I thought 1993 looked a class above. The rest fairly even.
I thought I'd pick a team from the 5 premiership teams and I ended up having the most players from the 2011 premiership. That could be because many of those were also premiers in 06 and a few also around for the 20/21 premierships.
8 from 1993. 7 from 2006. 9 from 2011. 7 from 2020. 5 from 2021.
It does sometimes feel like the league has dropped in standard when you're watching your team have an average season and comparing it to more successful seasons. That could be a false perception.
PS. Comparing those Glenelg teams - I think the current one is pretty special. 3 of 5 GF's and 2 premierships to bookend the era. And still looking strong now.

Re: 2008 GF Teams - comparison to modern day teams.
our 2023 side is clearly better than 2008/09 teams simply cos key forwards mcbean, hosie and reynolds have stood up in finals where grima, kirkby and mcconnell rarely did
