It's certainly smashed me around today, I've avoided the Michael Clarke statement the other day, the Fitzy tribute and despite coming into work early enough to be able to escape to the city, I can't bring myself to do it.
I'm still in disbelief, this has been the most hard-hitting celebrity passing that I've dealt with, I'm still shaking my head and tearing up every time I see or hear anything relating to it all.

I was like you until Saturday night. Saturday morning I was a mess, Clarke's statement was first, went and watched mates play cricket and whilst sitting by myself under a tree a Goodwood Oval a Redback squad member posts his put your bat out tribute with a bat Hughesy gave him when he first joined the team. I'm struggling to deal with that another Redback player from my club texts me simultaneously asking what the deal was for later in the afternoon when we opened up our club rooms for them.

Went to the club had a few beers, some laughs and I have been ok. Tried to avoid all media since then.

I for one have not been a Clarke knocker and I think people forget that the Aston Martin, Lara Bingle, blonde locks and flashy grin are actually the product of a working class Western suburbs lad from Liverpool, not that of some North Shore private school boy and all of those knockabout, true grit Aussie traits have come to the fore in the last week or so.

I was dubious when Clarke took over as captain as I wasn't sure his record supported him gaining that honour. His performance since taking over the role has certainly put paid any concerns I had. Both his captaincy & batting have been terrific. This week however has shown beyond that what a great individual & leader he truly is.

I don't think I have ever seen anything in my 60 odd years in life to compare with what I've seen in the last few weeks. Sport is alive and well and United in one, regardless of our code.

I must admit to being a Clarke knocker, shame on me, I promise to never question him again. I'd be proud to have him as my son.
