Pointless comp for Aussie sides
If Soccer is to grow in this country we need to take comps like this serious. We wanted to move to Asia to improve our soccer, we should treat the AFC with the respect it deserves
A bit hard when a team barely makes any coin from the comp, games are played right as we head into finals, playing against budgets well out of our range, our league has different import rules to the comp meaning blokes you buy for large amounts can't even play in the comp
I hope Melbourne play there reserves side and no one gets injured heading into finals

Wasn't hard for someone to back up Jims point. I agree with you Jim.
I remember last ACL Central Coast came up against a team in which had a players whis transfer fee was about seven tines the entire CCM salary cap. The Australian teams are a lot more competitive than they should.

$$$$ doesnt equal competitiveness in the ACL. The Chinese teams especially have to spend plenty to retain their players and stop them heading to other Asian leagues. Yes a Chinese team won it last year but in general the league is average and Chinese sides usually dont go too far in it. Adelaide United has rolled Pohang 3 or 4 times in the comp and they have a budget 5 times that of United. Aussie sides perform poorly because they treat the comp as a joke, if the Aussie sides took it seriously and played full strength sides there is no reason we shouldnt be atleast able to get out of the group stage

Central Coasts side the other night was virtually the same as the one they play in the A League mind you only having about 3 of last years championship side in both comps we'd struggle to be competitive anywhere atm! Asian clubs have improved a hell of a lot in the last couple of seasons where the A League has gone further backwards if anything.

Like I said its not just the player budgets, it's a combination of the timing, the fact teams can actually make a loss from a good cup run, well paid players can't even play.

So what about the timing. You hardly see EPL teams complaining when they are still alive in 4 cups. The travel and timing thing has always shitted me about Australia.

But we have to start somewhere. We knew what we were up against when we chose to enter Asia, the only way the comp will grow is if we all get aboard. We saw with some of the crowds that the Chinese especially are getting behind the mid week games. To think that all those years ago the European Cup would of started in similar the fashion with the French and other continental Europe countries getting aboard with the British countries reluctant at first. Eventually once everyone embraced it the conp grew to what it is now. With the money in Asia it is only a matter of time before the ACL is a very prestigious comp

Agree we knew what we were getting into but I think the Asia move was more about World Cup qualification rather than club football

Agree we knew what we were getting into but I think the Asia move was more about World Cup qualification rather than club football[/quote] That is probably true but the Asian confed has shown us great respect by granting us hosting rights to the 2015 Asian Cup which will be huge, the least we can do is reciprocate a bit of respect and atleast have a crack in the ACL. The AFC is only getting bigger and better and we need to jump onboard, who knows it may raise the profile and standard of the A-League with the ultimate goal of one day in the future hosting a World Cup
