Who xxxxed up The Forum ?

Was running the new format before it was launched, which meant that I had the old format until I logged in. It was then, switching between old and new, that I realised how dated and clunky the previous format was.

It doesn't take long to adjust to the new layout.

I'm getting used to it. Only problem I had with it was on my mobile another window would pop up & I couldn't get rid of it but it seems to be gone now so all good.

There is a feature I can have which means the mobile version is actually for a mobile. Or, the mobile version is identical. That always has problems.

In the meantime I have removed the FB/Twitter slide-ins.

But I still highly recommend using TapaTalk for any mobile device, be it tablet or phone (There are iOS, Android and Windows Phone versions). It really is a better way to browse the forum.

I like it.
The only problem I have is that of the avatar positioning - it makes it that bit harder to identify who's posting, as naturally your eye goes to the left of the page (in whatever you're reading), so I have to search for the poster's name, which is a bit smaller.

Apart from that, I reckon it's ok.

My only gripe is the size of the forum when you look at it on the smart phone. I do use Tapatalk over Safari some times but other times I'm already on Safari and just want to quickly open up SAFooty while I am there.

On the Avatar being on the right I'll use the forum for a while before making a judgement on it. At this early stage I am not a fan but it probably will become second nature soon enough.

I had it on the right for a week or two. Then, spent an hour changing it (which was incredibly hard) and it didn't work properly. But it looked weird, out of place (even though that's how it was on the previous design). So I reversed it and put it back on the right.

Now, I'm extremely used to it. So yes, give it a bit and you'll be used to it as well.

The old design had serious design flaws and issues... but we were used to them. Doesn't make them right.

I'll adjust things as I go, so feel free to send me private messages detailing exactly what you want to see - and an email if you need to (with screenshots).

Basically, there is no state when you look at a website. For the most part anyway.

You load up, say, SAfooty.net
You access the server, and the site is literally downloaded to your computer so you can see it. once it's loaded, it's done. The server doesn't know what you are doing, and you're in effect "offline".

It's not until you click a link or something similar, that the server than serves your next request. In between requests, you're offline.

This is the purpose of session cookies. When you log in, you get a cookie on your computer. When you click a link 5 minutes after first logging in, it knows who you are because of the cookie on your computer.

Logging in is like paying entry to a club, and getting a stamp

Then you leave later and want to get back in, they know you were already in, and allowed to be, because of the stamp, and in you go.

Else, you're treated as a new customer - and need to log in again.

Humanity doesn't like change.

We were all quite happy and at home with the setup as it was.

Our safooty family could communicate quite well.

Honestly cant believe how grown men are carrying on about the changes. Ive been using it for about 3 weeks and can hardly remember what the old one looked like. This layout and theme is great, and I appreciate Diss putting in the time to build a great system for all of us to use for free. I know I wouldnt do it. Especially if this is what Id have to put up with.
