Workout Tonight
I'm going to the gym tonight to workout with the wife, we are going to concentrate on core and abs and will probably hit a treadmill or bike as a warm up and small calorie burn.
The wife is only new to the 'gym scene' and is average fitness.
We have 45 minutes to work out.
What we be a good session which I could do with her.

Re: Workout Tonight
Teach her squats and deadlifts. They provide an excellent core workout, as well as engaging a number of lower and upper body muscles.

On top of them you could do lunges, planks and leg raises too.

Just teach her good form with manageable weight.
5 sets of 5 reps for each exercise will be a good starting point.

Nah we don't.

Was just thinking of ideas for whufc to do so maybe just planks then, they're great for core strength.

Can't just squat and deadlift. If you don't hit the anterior core directly you end up trying to stabilise your spine during the squats and deads with excessive lumbar extension(learnt this the hard way).
PS Planks are gay

Then you were lifting too much to begin with.

Nope, your anterior core muscles function in a number of different ways. Silly to think you can ignore targetting them more directly. Getting people squatting or deadlifting is a good start but once you start doing them semi regularly you need to make sure you balance the work on both the front and back. Some guys will be fine and never have a problem, but I bet a lot do unless they consciously adress imbalances.

You can directly work the rectus abdominus (which counters erector spinae shift on the spine), but you'll never be able to put the same direct load on it as you do in squats or deadlifts. You strengthen the RA by performing those exercises with correct form.
