Re: Excuses thread
Rice - couldn't see clearly because I was crying.
It is not a good look, interviewing athletes that are emotional & bawling because they didn't win. It really makes us look like a bunch of sore losers.
They should be happy that they qualified & tried their best, knowing they gave it everything & we are proud & thankful for the sacrifices they have made to get there.
Be proud, 99% of us can not claim to be Olympians.( although it is possible I could have rowed nearly as fast as that African rower who finished 90 seconds behind the winner the other day...a new Eric the Eel is born)

the fact that they have been doing this for many years, training and working hard, sacrificing things to be there, only to come second by a tenth of a second.......i would be emotional also.....
yyour footy team, plays in GF, loses after the final siren by a point, would you be emotional????? hmmmmm, i wonder, or would you be happy you gave it your best shot, only to lose it after the siren.........

I thought this last night while watching the Boomers klutz their way to a big loss.
Is it we're going sh!thouse, or we've been over-achieving for so long, that this is, realistically, about where we should be as a relatively small, yet competitive nation?

Re: Excuses thread
Most countries get up for their home Olympics by investing a lot more in sport during the lead up.
This has a lag effect as a lot of infastructure is in place and athletes go to multiple olympics.
China's strong showing at London is probably a lag from their efforts in growing sport pre Beijing 2008.
The last of the Sydney 2000 generation are all but finishing up here and we are returning to a more normal position where we will win our share of medals but not be an Olympics (ie Top 5) powerhouse.
I worked as a volunteer at Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006 and got to meet a wonderful range of athletes and officials from around the planet. I think that knocked out the jingoistic "Aussie Gold or nothing" out of me.
Yes I will cheer Australia on, wish them the best and share the success and failures with them BUT I can also appreciate other great sporting achivements that other participants produce.

Re: Excuses thread
I'm sick of the media questioning athletes from other nations if they put in a great effort whilst competing against an aussie. It's like they are looking for reasons to take the attention away from a crap performance by our athletes, by focusing the attention back onto the winning athlete and questioning the validity of their win. That's what pisses me off. Makes us look like a bunch of sooky pricks. After watching Magnussen talk himself up for the past three months, I hope it comes back and bites him on the arse and hopefully set a precedent, wherein all athletes will lay off the hero talk pre games and focus solely on putting in their best perfomance possible for their country. Leave the hero talk for after you win the gold medal.
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep
Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?
No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

Hear hear!! I reckon thats why half of em talk so much crap beforehand, cos they know they aint gonna get that post gold feeling.
Have any of our defeated olympians actually praised their opposition yet? Or are we all still using the "I dont know what went wrong" line.....
