2011 US Open
Djokovic and S.Williams the favourites.
Stosur and Tomic in action overnight, hopefully both can record first round wins.

Re: 2011 US Open
Tomic played pretty well, Rafter wasn't impressed though, his interview with Adam Peacock was hilarious.
Stosur played exceptionally well, lets hope it wasn't just a one-off.

Sums up womens tennis
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

Re: 2011 US Open
Cilic is a much better player than his current world ranking suggests but still wouldn't have expected him to beat Tomic like that!

Dokic I expected, didn't even think she'd get that close.
Tomic was disgraceful (this coming from a huge fan).
As for Gajdosova, losing like that to King, she needs a long, long, long spell.

Yes and no. He's very, very streaky, and for a while there he was a boderline hack. Basically when he's playing well (so far this US Open) he's a top 10 talent, when he's playing poorly, he barely deserves to be seeded at the Slams. Big talent, but BIG gap between best and worst.

Cilic is a massive talent. Very Safin like. On his day he could do all sorts, but the world gets to him too easily.

People seem surprised her serve is going badly when her shoulder is rooted. Perhaps they've never actually played before, but that's the single injury that will hurt the serve more than anything else! All other shots you can play around a little, but without getting into more technical boring details, you simply can't have a dodgy shoulder and serve well. Even a smash you can turn into a high forehand volley or come around on it and place it with spin.
Dokic, whether she does anything more or not, to me has proven herself. She had a massive issue with her dad. As a 16 year old Croatian (unless you know the culture that can be hard to really understand) she had no hope of being anything other than what Damir wanted her to be. Everything she said was Damir's words. When he felt there was a conspiracy, she said so. All respect to her for doing what nobody here has likely had to do and that was break from family and culture tradition by breaking ties. It seems easy to us, but I guarantee it's not for her. Since then she's had to rebuild her tennis from no confidence, form or fitness. With no coach at an age where woman often retire. And she managed to get back into the top 100 in the world and even give us some thrills along the way. She showed humility and was honoured (genuinely IMHO) by the respect she got back. I can 100% guarantee she will remember these days with fonder memories than getting to #4 in the world and reaching Wimbledon QF all those years ago.
As for Men's tennis, we have such little depth it's hard to see us doing better than challenging to stay in the world group in DC and a round of 16 contender might as well be a grand slam winner. Our depth is pathetic and our juniors are aweful.
