Suitable topic i've bumped here considering the latest update.

It's clear not enough wiggle room for the league to work in if COVID impacts the season again.

Is it time to look at smaller divs/shorter seasons?
Play on the long weekend perhaps?

8x team divs, 14 rounds per season.. not ideal and no doubt clubs would be sad, but might be easier to manage.. maybe you could keep the top 2 divs 10 teams and have their season run a bit longer.

Actually just make D7 an 8 team div.. 2 up this year, one down.. Ingle Farm to survive and stay in D6. 8)

Don't believe it ended up making it to a vote. Last I heard there were some Constitution issues that needed to be resolved before a club meeting and vote could occur and nothing has happened since. Back in June, the AdFL advised club delegates that Blackwood would not be joining in 2022 and that Blackwood have also been advised they will not be able to field a C grade team in the AdFL in 2022

Didn't want to start a new thread, so this will do haha!

Next year looks like it'll be interesting and/or a clusterphuck for scheduling with the announcement of AFL Gather Round coming the week before a later Easter!

Means that Round 1 will either have to be end of March / 1st week April and then have two weeks off.. or start after Easter which is last week of April.

If start later, wont be able to fit the 18 games in unless the finals are cut short
If start earlier then it's two weeks off, 6 games, another week off, 12 games, finals.

Thoughts?

Makes a great read, this thread!

Couple of the usual suspects getting mentioned as moving, still all in their same leagues :lol:

You are on the money Bedge with the conundrum the league has with the 2025 fixture now that Gather Round has been locked in. Having said that, it was fairly obvious GR would be the week before Easter next year so the league has probably devised a plan or options to float with clubs.

Virtually repeating your thoughts Bedge so Option 1 (if the league stays committed to no games on Gather Round) is for Round 1 on 5 April. No games the next 2 weeks then Round 2 on 26 April. This will leave only the June LW BYE for all grades and means Grand Final Day for all of D1 to D6 on Saturday 20 September (assuming the AFL GF is 27 September which it should be).

Options 2 and 3 could be the possibility of the league and clubs agreeing to a return of the final 4 for the 2025 season which means we could delay the season start until 26 April. Or stick with Round 1 on 5 April and keep the July BYE for D1 so that the D2 to D6 Grand Finals are 13/9 and D1 on 20/9 which seems the leagues preferred GF model.

Cricket (likely GF weekend for several comps) plus oval, player and volunteer readiness would make a 29 March start a disaster in my opinion.

Unfortunately I would think that option 1 is the most likely - Round 1 followed by 2 weeks off. From a volunteer point of view - and someone involved in cricket - the start after Easter would be ideal, but not sure how many clubs would be willing to forego a 5th finals spot to start later - expect maybe D7 which is only an 8 team comp.

Perhaps C grade divisions could be revamped and play a shorter season - start end of April, GFs played week before A grade.

Is out of the question to play on Gather Round or Easter? Wouldnt be opposed to a Thursdat Night or Good Friday round of matches personally, and other amateur sports do play on these weekends.

They've already announced / locked in the weekend before Easter.

Final 6 system for one year only over 3 weeks;

Week 1
* 1 & 2 get the bye (Home prelims awarded)
* 3 v 6 home final to 3, winner plays 2.
* 4 v 5 home to 4, winner plays 1

Week 2
* 1 v winner of 4 v 5
* 2 v winner of 3 v 6

Week 3
* Grand Final

Don't mind it. Think it also adds a bit more to clubs who can then fight for that additional 6th spot.
