SWEEPING changes have been made to the Next Generation Academy system, with a crackdown on eligibility and access coming as the AFL prepares to deliver its revamped zones to clubs.

AFL.com.au can reveal the significant changes made to the NGA system at the end of the League's long-running review, with alterations ticked off by the AFL Commission last week.

Among the key points, the AFL has removed the criteria that allowed a player to be tied to a club if they were born overseas in the relevant zones, with all NGA applications from now on to rely on parents' cultural backgrounds.

In the new eligibility, at least one parent is required to have been born in an eligible country, seeing examples such as Kye Fincher this year (who was born in Hong Kong while his mother was working abroad and is tied to St Kilda as a result) no longer accessible in the future unless the player has at least one parent born overseas.

The changes don't have an impact on Port Adelaide's bid for top 2026 draft prospect Dougie Cochrane to be approved for NGA status, with the club's application to be assessed on the current criteria being met.

Cochrane will get approved and then they will change the rules so that you can’t bid on first rounders. Good luck at West Coast Dougie

I don't understand this logic.
If they think a first rounder is too valuable, increase the points value of the first round picks.
If they are worried about too many round 4 and 5 picks being combine to come up with the value, make a rule that at least one pick must be from that same round, or the next round (or a variation of this).

But to quarantine pick 18 and have a free for all at pick 19 seems strange to me.

You mean other than display excessive arrogance, seek attention then grizzle about attention, and generally bag the general public and lower socio-economic groups including anyone that lives in Ballarat?

Not after one lot of changes announced. Plus, Tassie will find a Father / Son somewhere too.

Or travels there to watch their team lose by 15 goals.

With respect to madmonday; you have two options to be a SJW.

1) His dig at carro was clearly misogynistic with a large dose of toxic masculinity as a 20-something privileged white male he displayed aggression to a post-menopausal woman unable to defend herself.

2) His 'brokeback' mountain reference lacked compassion for those that struggle through the prejudice that comes with being a member of the LGBTQI+ community in Australia. He failed to understand his privilege as someone who doesn't face the persecution that gay men do, and for him to turn their struggles into his own gag for likes on Instagram is appalling.

(FWIW, I don't have an issue with either of his actions from Mad Monday, but many just love to be offended on behalf of others).

Smith is 25, he just needs to grow up.

Acting like a 13 year old, flashing the bird in every possible photo/social interaction is just embarrassingly lame.

Funny, the "anti woke" brigade are probably white males over 40 years old who called their neighbours Mr and Mrs when they kicked the footy on the road and when family came about you were seen, not heard and were polite as you addressed your Aunty and Uncle and if you didn't do any of the above the old man gave you a clip for being disrespectful.

Those same people are outraged when people get upset at Holmes dressing as Wilson and Smith flipping the bird.

It is a funny time in which we live.

Most white males over 40, that I know, dont get outraged so easily.
They think (for about 1 second) that both Holmes and the woke brigade are just tossers.

I think outrage is hilarious, clearly you mellow as you get older but I find the current trend of moral outrage very humourous.
