Coaching Merry-go-round

Post by AdelaideSaint73 »

Feels like there's been extra high movement this year. What do people think?

How many teams have new coaches in 2025? Feels like some Divs will have 50% of clubs with fresh faces.

Everything is harder these days - recruiting players, finding trainers, suitable coaches.

Everyone wants to feel valued and remunerated, and the asking price continues to increase year on year.

Feels like there is a shortage of good coaches coming through - and trainers - so a lot of shopping around and changing clubs.

Also feel like coaches are beginning to be a little more like players and cherry pick what roles they want based on opportunity for success.

Yeah agree, it seems a bit of a chicken or the egg scenario.

Are coaches cherry picking roles because nearly all clubs want instant success rather than build. I would also say it would be pretty hard for a coach to grow a club with players so often taking coin at the biggest bidder with not a lot of loyalty.

Having interviewed or contacted what feels like every coach in the state over the past few years, it's definitely the coaches not the clubs.

They all want top dollar to coach + a healthy player budget + guaranteed 40+ on the track + resources and equipment.

I also think because of the promotion/demotion element, clubs bringing in a new coach want (almost) instant success and not necessarily allow that time to build. Particularly if that means going backwards before going forwards.
With the uncertainty that a new coach brings, it can trigger players to look around, so there's even more emphasis on new coaches bringing players with them, or being able to go out and recruit, which is a bloody big ask.

Not every coach mate. Some just want good resources and support to be able to coach at their best

As a general proposition coaching, like everything else in local footy, seems to have expanded to involve a greater time commitment than ever before (same can be said for volunteers, committees, hell senior players) in a way i'm concerned at a macro level might be unsustainable.

Ultimately people are putting more hours into these roles than their full time jobs.

Totally agree. Coaches I know just want that good support, but it's also bloody hard as most clubs are being run by too few volunteers who look upon the coach as someone who comes in, works as hard as them (hopefully), but gets paid for it. Money muddies everything in local footy I reckon.

But I am aware of some coaches who have taken no pay increases over a whole job, even with success, because of loyalty to the club.

Yep, about a dollar an hour. Made up numbers, but it's well below minimum wage.

I'd love to see the SANFL Community footy people take things on a bit in terms of recruiting windows, and pre-season starting dates to give everyone a bit of a break from the volunteering roles.

They did, but then it was pushed back by the clubs which is why November is allowed for clearances again.

Need to get your recruits signed and onboarded as early as possible, because if it was left until February there is an increased chance in them disappearing elsewhere.

It's a very competitive area recruiting.

Resources are everything u need onfield ie equipment etc to ensure you can succeed. Shouldn’t have to chase the footy director for things

I'd love to see it open the first day of October and close last day of October. Get it all done, or wait and roll the dice in February when it opens again.

And no training as a club until second week of January at the earliest.

Kretschmer to Uni is big. Good footy brain, got the most out of his talent and physical ability as a player by being smarter than most. Will improve them. Another club with a new coach though.
