I have submitted a Private message but its still in the outbox and NOT in Sent messages.
I assume this hasn't been sent, am I doing something wrong?

Would presumably mean the person you sent it to hasn't clicked on it and read it yet.

Correct. When a person opens it, it will move from your Outbox to the Sent folder.
